Celebrating 50 Years of Innovation: The History of MBA Design & Display Products and Its Impact on the Global Museum Industry

In 2025, MBA Design & Display Products and its parent company, MBA Worldwide, proudly celebrate their50th anniversary. For half a century, MBA has been a trailblazer in creating sustainable, award-winning modular wall systems and self-adhesive surfaces that have transformed the museum, exhibition, and trade show industries. This milestone offers a perfect opportunity to reflect on MBA’s storied history, itsgroundbreaking products like Mila- wall® and SCENARIO®, and their profound influence on museums worldwide.

The Origins of MBA Worldwide: A Vision for Innovation

Founded in 1975 in Sonnebühl, Germany, by Gottfried A. F. Militzer, MBA Worldwide began with arevolutionary idea: to simplify and enhance the design of temporary wall surfaces. At the time, outfittingspaces for museums, trade fairs, and exhibitions was labor-intensive, involving costly painting or wallpapering. Militzer’s brainchild, the Milament film—a self-adhesive, low-reflection surface available in 30 vibrant colors—changed the game. This innovation allowed for quick, clean, and customizable wall designs, setting the stage for MBA’s future success. By 1980, over one million square meters of Milament films hadbeen sold globally, a testament to their immediate impact.

In 1987, MBA expanded its reach by establishing MBA Design & Display Products Corp. in Exton, Pennsylvania, to serve the North American market. A year later, the company relocated its headquarters toReutlingen, Germany, where it remains today. Under the leadership of Markus Militzer, Gottfried’s son, MBAhas continued to innovate, earning a reputation for high-quality, sustainable solutions that prioritizeaesthetics and functionality.
